چکیده
tures occurring in terrier breeds (all but one fracture) and in particular the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (86% of affected dogs). In this breed TTAF was not a rare fracture, accounting for 3.3% of admissions in dogs less than one-year of age compared to 0.18% for other breeds. We agree with von Pfeil et al that TTAF is generally a result of a tensile trauma, commonly occurring following a fall or awkward jump. We suggested that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was at particular risk due to its large quadriceps mass/ strength relative to the size/strength of its tibial tuberosity physis such that strong contraction of the quadriceps in combination with sudden stifle flexion (as may occur on landing from a fall) would result in TTAF. We also agree with von Pfeil et al that OSD in people should be considered a separate entity from TTAF in dogs. In none of the dogs in our series did we see evidence of newbone formation at the insertion of the patellar tendon on the tibial tuberosity as reported in OSD. Other conclusions from von Pfeil et al’s review however were not supported by our study. In the 65 fractures we reported on, three predominant fracture patterns were seen and these do not correlate with the classification system proposed by von Pfeil et al. The most common pattern was an isolated tibial tuberosity avulsion fracture with no involvement of the proximal tibial epiphysis (57% of fractures). The degree of displacement of the tibial tuberosity was variable. We also recognised TTAF in combination with variable degrees of elevation/ separation of the cranial aspect of the proximal tibial epiphysis (23%) and TTAF in combination with complete Salter-Harris type II fracture of the epiphysis, with the fracture line extending into the caudal metaphysis of the tibia (20%). In the dogs we reported on the majority of TTAF of all types occurred at fourto five-months of age, contrary to the suggestion of von Pfeil et al that certain types were seen most often in eightto 11-month-old dogs. We recognise of course that our results were dominated by a single medium-sized breed and that von Pfeil et al’s eight cases included large breed dogs. It should not be surprising that disparate study populations yielded different results. It is clear however that some of the conclusions drawn by von Pfeil et al, and also their proposed classification scheme, are not relevant to all dogs.

High Frequency Magnetic Fields in Treatment of Osgood-Schlatter Disease
We are studied efficacy of high frequency magnetic fields (HFMFs) in treatment of Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) including X-rays signs. THELF system apparatus has been used for treatments on 32 young sportsmen (9-15 years). 18 boys and 14 girls, with HFMFs (base frequency 27.125 MHz, with different impulse repetition frequency of 640 Hz and 320 Hz, and absorbed power 3-5 VA). Injured sportsmen...
متن کاملDoes Osgood-Schlatter disease exist in the dog?
Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) is a condition affecting human adolescents in which there is partial separation of bone fragments from the tibial tuberosity at the site of insertion of the patellar ligament to the tibial tuberosity. Tensile trauma seems to be the most likely aetiology. Clinical signs in people consist of swelling and pain at the proximal part of the tibial tuberosity and around ...
متن کاملDoes Osgood--Schlatter disease influence the position of the patella?
The Blackburne and Peel method of assessing the position of the patella was applied to 185 knees with Osgood--Schlatter disease in 125 patients. The normal index of 0.80 was confirmed in 73 control knees. The average index in the knees with Osgood--Schlatter disease measured 1.01 (patella alta) boys and 0.91 in girls. The value increased to 1.06 in boys with radiological evidence of loose ossic...
متن کاملOsgood-Schlatter disease--ultrasonographic diagnostic.
Osgood-Schlatter disease is a condition that is caused by traction of the muscle-tendon unit at tibial tuberosity, which affects adolescents who exercise. The predisposing factors include rapid growth and physical activity, particularly running and jumping. Osgood- Schlatter disease causes intermittent pain, which can be aggravated by running, cycling and climbing stairs. We present the case of...
متن کاملRisk assessment of the onset of Osgood–Schlatter disease using kinetic analysis of various motions in sports
BACKGROUND Some studies have listed motions that may cause Osgood-Schlatter disease, but none have quantitatively assessed the load on the tibial tubercle by such motions. PURPOSES To quantitatively identify the load on the tibial tubercle through a biomechanical approach using various motions that may cause Osgood-Schlatter disease, and to compare the load between different motions. METHOD...
متن کاملOsgood-Schlatter disease in ultrasound diagnostics--a pictorial essay.
This paper tries to describe reasons, pathophysiological sequence of events, including the sequelae, and location of the traumatic tears of the ossification center of the tibial tuberosity in adolescents. Ultrasonographic features characteristically seen in the traction type of Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) are presented in a pictorial. The classification and definitions used are based on the ...
